Kii Yazhi was a proud Navajo boy.
He was sent to a mission school to learn the way of the white man and forget his Navajo language.
His name was changed to Ned Begay and his hair cut short.
You are smart. We will teach you Navajo code to help during the war. It must be kept secret.
Ned was proud to be a marine and worked hard communicating with code and saving lives in the Pacific during WWII.
He returned home safe. He was strong and brave. However, the Navajo code was still a secret and no one could know how smart and brave the Navajo Marines were.
Finally, 25 years later, the government released the files of the Navajo code talkers. Ned was able to tell his grandchildren his story. The Navajo code talkers received a medal.
