Schemas and Remembering Stories. Jamila Gillani

Storyboard Text

  • In 1932 Bartlett collected 20 participants for a study , 13 men and 7 women.
  • He tested them in two different ways , Serial Reproduction Task and Repeated Reproduction Task although for both he used the story " War of the Ghosts".
  • Serial Reproduction Task- the participant read the story to themselves and then repeated it to a second participant 15 minutes later.
  • Repeated Reproduction Task: The participants read the story to themselves and then repeated it 15 mins later, later on at different intervals( 8 days, 10 years) more reproductions were performed.
  • The findings were that very few people recalled the story accurately. Bartlett analysed the results and found the following trends...
  • Form: the outline of the story remained. Details: Names and numbers were forgotten. Simplification: The form was simplified. Addition: Information was added.
