The year is 1959. A wealthy man known as Herbert Clutter is walking around his farm, River Valley Farm, located at Holocomb, a city in western Kansas. Today will be his last.
During Clutter's inspection of his farm, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith meet up to tune their vehicle, a 1949 Cheverolet Sedan to prepare for a long drive.
As this occurs, Nancy Clutter (daughter of Herbert) is at home teaching a local girl, Jolene Katz on how to bake cherry pies while settled in her home. Nancy is moved out and does not live with her parents.
While serving time prison, Perry learns from an inmate that a wealthy man known as Herbert Clutter lives along the western area of Kansas, and has a safe full of money. He and Richard plan to kill Herbert for his cash.
The duo begin their mission by driving along the state of Kansas, purchasing gloves and rope while on the way. They discuss who might be at the household, and how they should cleverly murder the family.
After purchasing the gloves and rope, Perry and Richard attempt to purchase additional supplies; they stop at a convent to try and obtain some stockings to hide their faces. Afterwards, the two eat a dinner at a town nearby the Clutter household.
