Storyboard Text

  • Nullification
  • I disagree. Any slave entering the Union should have the choice of being a slave state.
  • No no no. If you are given the option then the senate will have more power coming from slave states. We need to keep an equal balance
  • Compromise of 1850 and Kansas-Nebraska Acts
  • Now the senate is unbalanced! It is no fair that California got to enter as a free state.
  • How about we let u get runaway slaves back for California for being a free state?
  • Then it is settled California is a free state and the fugitive slave act is now in act.
  • Debates over slavery and slave rights
  • During the 1830s many old treaties and documents were being starting to be nullified, or were declared unconstitutional. The Kansas-Nebraska said that Kansas could choose to be a slave or free state. By doing this, the Missouri compromise was nullified. This started to cause tension between the states, because new territories did not know wether to be slave or free states.
  • Dred Scott case and Missouri compromise
  • He should be a slave, he belongs here.
  • How are you gonna deny the rights we have in the North? "Once free, always free."
  • The Compromise of 1850 was where California entered the union as a free state. The South became furious because that meant the free states would have more power in the Senate. Therefore they put the fugitive slave act where any escaped slaves would be shipped back down to the south and returned to their owners.
  • Georgia platform and election of 1860
  • We are all running for president. For the Northern Democrats, Southern Democrats, Union and Republican.
  • Slavery and states rights were two factors that led to the secession. In the North, slaves weren't as important and they weren't necessary, therefore they pushed more towards releasing them. In the South, slaves were vital to the economy , therefore they fought to keep slavery. Once Abraham Lincoln was elected, the south feared that the Republicans would take too much power and ban slavery. Different laws applied to the south than the north because both had completely different people and jobs. The South felt it would be better to secede so they could have different laws and so they could keep slavery.
  • Debate over secession and Alexander Stephens
  • I fully accept the roles as vice president of the Confederation.
  • Dred Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom after his master took him to a free state and died. He first went to court in 1847 and was declared still a slave then he repealed and became free. Then this kept going backc in forth or being a slave then free until this case went to the supreme court where they ruled him a slave and the Missouri compromise unconstitutional. The Missouri compromise was know for the creation of the 36 30 line to level out the tensions. After these decisions were made the tension grew and festered and soon to pop after the next election.
  • Georgia's platform was that they needed slaves without them their industries might not be able to survive. Now the election of 1860 comes along where 4 candidates run to take the country at these desperate times. Lincoln won the electoral college over after a long election. This result made Georgia think about to take their platform a little farther.
  • After the heated tensions of Lincoln beginning of the election, many states wanted to secede and became nervous about the election. Now there was a divide in Georgia to secede or stay with the union, finally the general assembly voted 208 to 89 in favor of seceding. When Georgia seceded from the Union they appointed their old senator and famous politician to be vice president of the confederacy.
