In the story The King of Mazy May, Walt had been left alone to watch his fathers and neighbors claims. He had been worried yet relieved. His fathers claim had stakes, but Loren Hall´s had not.
Loren Hall had fallen through ice and he would not be back anytime soon, but how unfortunate Walt had been. A PROFESSIONAL pack of stampeders had crossed his path. They were looking to jump some claims and because of the delay, it would be easy to get Loren Hall´s. The stampeders sat 2 claims from Walt, he watching them as they discuss they will let their dogs rest and go to Dawson to record that they were rich for claim 32.
Walt had to think quickly. When the stampeders went to look at claim 32, one stayed behind, but they found gold, so he went to go look. That was Walt´s chance. He had stolen the dogs, picked a lead, and was on his way.
After a while the stampeders saw him, one tried to catch him, but he got hurt. The stampeders slowed down, and Walt had rested, he had reached the Yukon. Soon enough Walt gained 200 yd. The stampeders shot the lead dog, Walt threw it to the side and struck the men with a whip to slow them down.
Walt was once again heading to Dawson with a pretty good lead, this after he chose the proper lead dog , for the first one was not. Walt had picked up Loren on his way, he was traveling back home on foot. They went to Dawson for Loren to record his claim, and they ended up getting there first.
Walt is still remembered for all he has done, and what he had gone through to help his neighbor keep his claim, even with the life he has lived, being a child, and not experiencing much. Walt Masters did a great thing.
