Matthew Gaines was a slave, baptist preacher, minister, and a state senator.
Matthew Gaines escaped to freedom twice. The first time he escaped was after he was sold to a man from Louisiana and put to work on a steamboat. His second escape was after he was sold once again to a planter. He tried to go to mexico but only made it to Fort McKavett in Menard County.
Matthew Gaines was a guardian to the rights and interests of African Americans. He talked about education, prison reform, the protection of blacks, and the election of blacks to public office.
