Leonard has a flashback to when him and Asher were best buds. On Asher's 11th birthday, Leonard took them both to Green Day with front row tickets. Asher raved about how it was the best night of his life and how they would be best friends forever... oh, how things can change.
Leonard visits a girl that he has grown to fall in love with, after school. She often hands out pamphlets on "God saving you" and what-not at the subway, and although Leonard is a raging atheist, something about the girl's passion and naive personality really intrigues him. He gives her a necklace with a silver cross and kisses her.
Lastly, Leonard goes to Asher's house to end both of their lives. It would be the final decision he ever made in his life time, and something about being thrown into a corner with no other options and feeling forced to do something really didn't resonate with his personality and everything he stood for. He couldn't do it.
Leonard was under a bridge ready to shoot himself when he received a call from Herr Silverman. The teacher recognized the drastic urgency of the situation and took a cab to meet Leonard. They each professed deep emotions along with the reasons why Leonard wanted to kill Asher, and Herr Silverman convinced Leonard that things would get better if he hung on.
