  • Symbol
  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • The symbol is the ibis. It symbolizes hope and strength because it really wasn't supposed to be farther north than Florida and it had traveled all that way. The scarlet ibis is a tropical bird.
  • Theme
  • The symbol is the coffin. It symbolizes his family's disbelief in Doodle's life. They waited three months to finally give him a name but they also had purchased a coffin with no belief that he would live. A coffin really symbolizes death.
  • Dynamic Character
  • Imagery is visually descriptive or figurative language. "A grindstone stands where the bleeding tree stood" "Its song seems to die up in the leaves, a silvery dust. The flower garden is prim, the house a gleaming white, and the pale fence across the yard stands straight and spruce." pg. 350
  • Personal Reaction
  • The theme is to never give up. If the narrator would have given up and lost hope on Doodle when he was trying to learn how to walk, then Doodle would have never learned. Also, Doodle never gave up trying to be like his brother. Doodle would always want to go everywhere with his brother so he could be like him and feel normal.
  • The dynamic character is the narrator, Doodle's brother. The narrator is dynamic because his feelings toward Doodle change through out time. He has changed because he was very rude about Doodle's abilities and now he regrets how he treated Doodle since Doodle is gone.
  • I feel sad because of the way Doodle died and how Doodle was treated. I think that the narrator is a bad brother because of the way he treated Doodle. He would try to hurt Doodle by flipping him out of the wagon so Doodle wouldn't want to go with him anymore.
