  • When the world gets ugly enough- a woman will do anything for her family. The part that's already living.
  • No-no- Ruth would n't do that.
  • You don't know Ruth, Mama, if you think she would do that.
  • Yes I would too, Walter. I gave her a five-dollar down payment.
  • Walter and his mother are going back and forth and then Mama tells Walter that Ruth is pregnant and thinking about getting an abortion.
  • Well- Well- son, I'm waiting to hear you say something . . . I'm waiting to hear how you be your father's son. Be the man he was . . . 
  • Walter is disputing these outlandish remarks.
  • Ruth-
  • If you a son of mine, tell her!
  • Ruth chimes in on the discussion to confirm that she indeed is considering abortion and has already begun the process. 
  • You . . . you are a disgrace to your father's memory.
  • Walter stands in silence as his mother scolds him and demands he speak up and act as his father would.
