Emperor Asoka was a wonderful ruler. ut he was very different from most rulers. After one bloody fight, he walked over the battlefield when he saw how many people were killed or hurt he vowed to dedicate his life to peace and the teachings of the Budda.
Emperor Asoka was one of the first Buddhist kings, he also founded hospitals for people and even animals. He also built new roads with shade trees along them.
Emperor Asoka sent teachers around India and Asia to teach to more people about the Budda. Asoka had laborers carve Buddhist teachings into stone pillars.
Emporer Asoka had laborers built thousands of stupas, stupas are Buddhist shrines tat are in the shape of a dome or mound. Also, he allowed others to practice whatever religion they choose, this was unusual for the period of time.
Emperor Asoka dies in 232 B.C. The kings after him were not very cool rulers and the empire weakened over time. They made merchants pay heavy taxes and took crops for themselves. In 183 B.C. one ruler was so awful that on of his own generals.
