  • Rising Action
  • The Novel is set in a futuristic society in which 'firemen' burn books in order to keep peace. After a long day on the job, fireman Guy Montag meets a 17 year old girl named Clarisse. She asks him if he is happy with his life to which he insists he is. However, it makes him question his life.
  • Climax
  • Later that night Montag sees his wife Mildred unconscious from sleeping pills. She lives the next day but doesn't remember the event. That night, Montag, on a routine run, sees an old lady who burned herself along with her books. Although he knows it is wrong, he manages to take one book and bring it home.
  • Falling Action
  • That morning Montag refuses to go into work, instead he claims he is sick and stays at home. His chief, Captain Beatty pays Montag an unexpected visit. He knows that Montag took the book and tries to use reason to get him to reject anything he has read so far. He even goes on to say books offend the minor minorities and must be stopped so that everyone can have a "fun" life
  • Resolution
  • The story climaxes when Montag reads a book of poetry to his wife Mildred and her friends as they were visiting. The women are angered and offended just as Captain Beatty warned the public would be at the hands of books. They ladies eventually storm out, and leave Montag alone, unaware of his fate.
  • His wife and her friends report Montag to the authorities. When Montag goes to work that night they receive an alarm and rush over to a house; it is his. Montag is then ordered to burn the books he has collected himself. He refuses and burns Captain Beatty and the other firemen, then flees down a river where he finds a secret society of people who loves books as well.
  • Montag and his new friends plan to travel to St. Louis to find a book printer and start to republish books so that people can be changed like him. Instead, a jet is seen overhead and drops bombs in the area, destroying the colony. The last scene of the book is Montag's group searching for survivors to rebuild civilization. His wife is presumed dead and Montag feels no sorrow for her except that she never contributed to anything in her life.
