  • In 1902, they arrived in New York City.  Unlike countless other immigrants, they were permitted to keep their original names.
  • However, because they were Irish, they faced a lot of prejudice, among the other Irish immigrants.
  • They moved into a tenement apartment on W 17th St in Manhattan 
  • Also during the year 1902, Cuba gained formal independence from the USA, but the Americans still controlled large parts of the Cuban economy and had military influence
  • In 1909, they had their first child, Michael Curry
  • Like the majority of immigrants who had moved to the US, the Currys were poor, so Mary worked as a laundress to provide for her family
  • In 1911, they had their second child, James Phillip Curry (I)
