  • Rising Action
  • Using the information they obtained from their criminal contact, Artemis and Butler travel to Ho Chi Minh City to acquire a copy of "The Book of the People". They find a sprite disguised as a healer. The trick the healer into drinking poison (telling her it is wine), and then offers the antidote to the sprite only if they can copy the book. The sprite finally agrees and Butler photographs the pages to take back to Fowl Manor to translate. In the 'antidote' is actually medicine to cause the healer to have amnesia so Artemis and Butler will not be caught.
  • Rising Action
  • Artemis puts the pages of the book into his computer program to decode. He basis the decoding on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. After playing around with the line order and word order, he begins to translate the book. He learns how to avert the fairies magic, and that fairy gold is real - and it is actually a fund for ransom payment of fairy fold. Artemis decides the best way to restore the Fowl Fortune is to kidnap a fairy.
  • Rising Action
  • Artemis learns that the People have to pick a seed from an ancient oak tree by a bend in a river, which is so specific that he's able to narrow it down to where this is possible. He and Butler stakeout this location where they believe a fairy will come to get the seed - and therefore be low on magic and easier to kidnap. Here they find Holly, a fairy with LEPrecon( or the Lower Elements Police recon), who is dangerously low on magic (it's been years since she replenished) and distracted by her need to get her magic fixed fast. Butler and Artemis kidnap her with the aid of a tranquilizer gun and mirrored sunglasses (which prevent Holly from being able to mesmerize them).
  • Rising Action
  • They take her back to Fowl Manor to a special fairy-proof cell they have constructed. Holly wakes up in a cell with her acorn still hidden in her shoe. She looks for soil to bury it in and regain her magic, but there is none to be found. Artemis enters and he tells Holly that his plan is to use her to obtain Fairy Gold. Holly is shocked that he knows so much and asks how he has this information. Artemis claims he drugged her with truth serum for three days. He makes Holly believe she betrayed her entire species and will be banished if she ever gets free.
  • Foaly, a centaur with LEPrecon, realizes they have lost contact with Holly. He notifies his commander, Julius Root and they download the audio and video from Holly's helmet before it went dead. They hear Artemis and Butler confront her and see the tranquilizer come toward her - and they realize she has been kidnapped. Root orders Recon and Retrieval out after Holly and track her using the locator she had on her wrist. Artemis, however, had found the locator and put it on a whaling ship to send the fairies on a wild goose chase. When Root and Recon enter the ship , Artemis identifies himself (via microphone) and sets off a bomb, which the fairies barely escape.
  • Foaly researches Artenia and his Family and learns where Fowl manor is located. Many in recon want to blow up the manor and be done, but Root wants to rescue Holly. They make plans to attack and 'negotiate' with Artemis and save Holly. They bring a troll for a distraction if needed, and Mulch Diggums, a professional thief who can tunnel his way into the manor to be their eyes and ears. The People are forbidden to enter a humans home without the human's permission, but Mulch has been a thief for so long his magic is gone and the rules don't apply to him. Any other fairy who enters a human home without permission or without the human being deceased becomes violently ill.
