Actually, the reason your neck might be hurting could be caused by your smart phone! Continuous maintenance of forward head and slouched posture can cause cervical and lumbar vertebrae damage (Kim, Park, 2015, p. 569-70).
Ugh! My neck hurts so much! What can I do about it doc?
Well calm down! There is a lot of research that supports this claim. Heavy smartphone use causes loss of the natural curve of the spine and it puts stress on the cervical spine, causing pain in the neck and shoulder muscles (Hansjar, 2014, p. 277-9).
So you're telling me that my smart phone is causing my pain!? I think you're crazy!
Looking down at your phone in your hands is actually the problem you are facing. You're putting 60 pounds of pressure on your neck when you look down 60 degrees to stare at your phone in your hands. Looking straight ahead of you to enjoy your device is the best option (Hansjar, 2014, p.277-9).
I guess that actually makes sense! Maybe you actually know what you are talking about after all! So what can I do to fix it?
That's a great question! There was a study conducted that suggested that students experiencing pain in their necks and backs seemed to be happier when they unplugged from the technology surrounding them! (Cruz, 2014).
Thank you, Doc! You've helped me realize my smartphone use may be too much for me! What should I do now?
The doc was right! This is awesome! I should have unplugged a long time ago!
