  • The woodpile is brought up when she is comparing the warm and damp basement to a sealed glass jar.
  • Symbolism
  • Heather birds were a symbol of freedom and being different from everyone else. These are part of the reason Millicent decided not to join the club.

  • "Within Millicent another melody soared strong and exuberant, a triumphant answer to the music of the darting heather birds that sang so clear and lilting over the far lands." -Plath pg 247
  • Theme
  • In the story a sparrow represents being like everyone else and fitting in and not being free.
  • Bev is a character in the story and she takes Millicent through the process of Initiation. She is a very mean and rude character and she is also a flat character because she does not change throughout the story.
  • The main theme of the story is don't do something just because you think it is cool, do what you want to do and don't be afraid to be different.
