my bio of Mary Edwards Walker

Storyboard Text

  • Read the journey of the life of the first female surgeon: Mary Edwards Walker
  • Fun Fact: Mary was the youngest out of all her 5 sisters and 1 brother
  • Women can grow up to whatever they dreamed of being!
  • It's ok for both genders to wear clothing of whatever they prefer too!
  • hmm that seems possible...
  • This is me; Mary Edwards Walker. I was born on November 26 1832.
  •
  • I was born to an abolitionist family. Which meant, my family didn't believe in slavery. My parents raised my siblings and I to be independent and have confidence.
  • They also taught us that everyone has a right. Both race and gender. My parents even taught us  non-traditional gender roles, this soon impacted me soon later on.
  • CONGRATS!
  • When I got older I dreamed of becoming someone useful in the environment.  I wanted to be to be a surgeon, a job that back then that many women couldn't work as because women weren't allowed to have such big jobs like men.
  • I dedicated myself to life as a surgeon. My dream became reality when later on  I enrolled in Syracuse Medical college! But the experience was different as expected seeing I was the only female in her class.
  • Even through the difficulty of society telling me a female like me can't accomplish big things, I proved them wrong by graduating with a Medical of Degree when i was 23 in 1855.
