During the First World War, the concept of a nation's civility towards another one completely disappeared. This meaning, as opposed to only attacking their opponents' soldiers, they would kill civilians as well. Another facet of the brutality was the manifestation of weapons - new weapons of mass destruction, such as gas, that could instantly kill thousands of people.
