  • The quote "the basement was like a sealed jar" is a simile because it uses the word "like". What she's trying to mean is she feels as if she's trapped in the basement and there's no escape so that's why she's comparing it to a sealed jar.
  • Metaphor
  • "For some reason Millicent thought of the heather birds. It was then that she made her decision." What the story is tyring to mean by this quote is when she thought of the heather birds and how they do everything care free she made the decision that she doesn't have to be part of the sorority because she's her own person and she doesn't have to take orders from the sorority so she decides that she is going to leave the sorority.

  • tonight was the grand finale, the trial by fire. There really was no doubt now that she would get in. She could not think of anyone who had ever been invited into the high school sorority and failed to get through initiation time. This quote means that Millicent is really confident of getting into the sorority because of all the other things that has happened with other members of the sorority.

  • "It was as if she had been sitting for years in a pavilion outside a dance floor." This quote means that since Millicent has been left out for years now this is another example of how she feels about it.

This quote is an example of imagery because it talks about velvet skirts and a silken train, which is describing what the skirts and train would be like.
  • "How absurdly funny, me taking orders from this girl like a servant." This quote is a simile because it uses the word like to compare Millicent to a servant.
