Storyboard Text

  • Call to Adventure
  • What about me?
  • Threshold
  • I can see color?
  • Mentor
  • Jonas is the main character in the book, "The Giver," by laur... Jonas's call to adventure in the story is when his name is skipped in the ceremony. This leads up to him being called last and is chosen to become the new Receiver of Memory. This is the person that holds all memories and allows the townsfolk to go on with their regular lives. This starts his heroes journey.
  • Physical Challenges
  • Jonas meets his mentor during the threshold. The old receiver of memory is now too old, and must get a new one, as his previous successor failed 10 years before. Every one given an assignment has rules, but Jonas has a very specific set of rules which shows him how important he is. This is not a bad thing though, as it shows Jonas he was truly chosen out of all the 12s for this job. Jonas starts to cross this threshold when he starts to see color, which no one else can see in the town.
  • Emotional Challenge
  • Jonas' mentor in this story is obvious. His mentor is the Giver, or Receiver of memory. He will be teaching Jonas everything he needs to know about being the new Receiver of memory, and he will familiarize Jonas with his new, confusing assignment.
  • Emotional Challenge
  • Jonas' only physical pain through the book is the pain he feels when he is getting the memory that the giver transfers. Even when he feels these physical pains, he feels the emotional pain of the people who lived through that pain.
  • Jonas goes through mostly emotional challenges. Due to the fact that he is gaining memory, he starts to feel the pain of the memories. Some good does come from this though because he gains knowledge from the past world, the "normal world". This gives him confusion with his world. Jonas enjoys the other world more, which makes him not want to return to his home.
  • When Jonas goes through his first session of transferring memory with the giver, he sees snow. The giver wants to start with pleasant memories, so he starts with some snow fun. Jonas starts feeling the breeze, as if he were in snow. He not only gains the memory, he lives the memory. Jonas enjoys the snow so much that when he returns home, he gets distracted.
  • What is this? Where am I?
