  • In 1854, a group of whigs, democrats, free-soilers, and abolistionist came together to form the Republican Party. A political party that united against the spread of slavery in the west.

  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act broke the Democrat and the Whig party, some of them joined the "Know-Nothing" Party
  • Let us join the "Know-Nothing" Party!

  • The "Know-Nothing" Party had nominated former president Millard Filmore
  • We nominate, Millard Filmore
  • Civil War 1861
  • The Democrat party nominates former secretary of state, James Buchanan!
  • The Democrat party nominated James Buchanan of Penslyvania. He was known as Polk's secretary of state.
  • The Republicans chose explorer John C. Fremont. Who stood against the spread of slavery. But had little political experience.
  • The newly found Republican party choses explorer John C. Fremont.
  • James Buchanan of the Democrat party won the election with 14 of the 15 slave states. Fremont 11 of the 16 free states. Filmore had only won one state.
