  • Brushing and cleaning your teeth everyday is important because it removes plaque (leftover food). If the plaque isn't removed, it continues to build up, the bacteria breaks it down into acids that eat away at the teeth, causing holes called cavities, tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Don't drink to many fizzy drinks replace it with water
  • You can start cleaning your child's teeth as soon as the first tooth appears with a soft tooth brush and water but do not use toothpaste as the flavour will be too strong. But as they get used to the toothbrush slowly introduce a small amount of toothpaste. Brush the child's teeth for 2 minutes twice everyday.
  • Go to the dentist regularly
  • If you eat too many sweets it will affect you teeth and your health. The sugar in sweets stay on your teeth, creates acid which destroys the tooth enamel (The protective layer on the tooth) Plaque builds up and will lead to tooth decay. Replace sweets with fruit and vegetables.
  • Calcium makes your bones and teeth strong
  • Fizzy dinks produce acid and sugar that attack your teeth so drinking water will not damage the enamel so your teeth wont decay. When drinking fizzy drinks drink it through a straw so the sugar wont go on your teeth. Water is a healthy option as it is good for your skin and body.
  • Check-ups at the dentist allows your dentist to see if you have any problems and helps you keep your mouth healthy. Leaving problems untreated could make them more difficult to treat in the future. You should visit the dentist every 6 months or the next date the dentist suggests.
  • Calcium is very important to include in your diet because it helps you teeth and bones become strong, It regulates muscle contractions in the body and it ensures that blood clots normally. To receive calcium you can eat milk, cheese and other dairy foods.
