At 315V the learner stops responding to shocks and questions given by the teacher. The experimenter orders the teacher to take no response as an incorrect answer and to continue with the shocks.
If the teacher turns to the experimenter for guidance, the experimenter tells the teacher to continue, giving a set of verbal prods to encourage him to continue when he protests to going on in the procedure.
The test is considered completed when the teacher either refuses to continue even after the four verbal prods, or when the teacher reaches 450V on the shock generator.
After the procedure, the teacher is de-hoaxed and a short interveiw between the experimenter and the teacher is carried out. The teacher is asked to rate how painful they thought the shocks were on a scale of 0-14, along with other questions.
A friendly reconciliation with the learner is carried out and tensions built up during the experiment are now attempted to be let down.
Further questions are asked to the teacher to ensure that he is in a state of well-being before leaving the experiment. A copy of the results and conclusions of the experiment is sent the the participants at a later date.
