Storyboard Text

  • Here is the Alvarez family, John and Alyssa both moved to the mission district of San Francisco 15 years ago with high hopes of opening their own business and raising their kids in a good community.
  • SF Mission District
  • Hi John, Congrats on your new shop!
  • John opened up his own local pawn shop, much of his business came from locals of the mission district community. The shop was also the primary soruce of income for the Alvarez family, paying their rent and other expenses. Life was good for them, they were in the midst of the American dream.
  • WE BUY!
  • JOHN'S PAWNS
  • YOU SELL!
  • Thanks Neighbor!
  • We've been playing here  our whole life , you can't just kick us off.
  • One day as the Alvarez boys were playing soccer on the field they grew up using they encountered a team of boys they had never even seen before. The new boys tried kicking them off the field, completely disregarding the Alvarez boy's entitlement to use it. The boys would come home with many questions for their parents.
  • Permit schermit, why dont we just share?
  • No, you have to leave we are kicking you off.
  • Well we just moved here and we reserved the field,   so get  out of here.
  • Permit
  • Dad today some boys kicked us off the field, they said they just moved in here. It doesn't seem fair at all.
  • The boys had experienced their first glimpse of gentrification and Mr. Alvarez knew well what was going on. Neighbors were disappearing because they could not afford their expenses any more and a new wave of affluent families began to transform the area.
  • Some things are changing son, lately business has been slow and it seems like more of our neighbors are gone every day, try not to let it bother you.
  • With more and more locals vanishing, John's customer base has taken a hit and he has to close down his business. A Starbucks is replacing it to accompany the "needs" of the more affluent population taking over. The community is being transformed but simultaneously leaving families such as the Alvarez's in the dust.
  • COMING SOON:
  • JOHN'S PAWNS
  • OUT OF BUSINESS everything must go (including the locals)
  • What am I going to do now? Everything we worked for was here and now we cant even afford a life in our own home.
  • STARBUCKS (overpriced coffee)
  • Say hello to our new home everyone.
  • Gentrified Mission District
  • Where are we going to go daddy?
