Storyboard Text

  • Adolescents in Anne Arundel County Public Schools are being forced to wakes up super early five days a week to go sit at a desk and be too tired to even pay attention to their lessons.
  • In AACPS, High school students are awake by 6 AM and have to be in their first period by 7:17 AM. Middle School students start about 8 AM. How does this affect them you ask?
  • Experts say that typically adolescents are unable to fall asleep at earlier times and sleep in later to get the sleep they need (around 8-11 hours). They are unable to do this with the school start times they have.
  • Even sleep experts and Physicians are urging a delay for morning classes until 8:30 am or later.
  • How do you feel about the AACPS school start times? Do you feel that you would work better if you came in later and got more sleep?
  • *Get two student responses*
  • Studies have proven that delaying school start times by one hour increased standardized test scores by at least 2 percentile!
