  • Republican Party - a political party formed to stop the spread of slavery in the west.
  • Then on March 20th 1854, democrats, Free-Soilers, Whigs, and abolitionists all joined together to create the Republican Party.
  • The Republican Party elected John C. Frémont as their presidential candidate to go up against the American Party's candidate, Millard Fillmore, and the Democrat's candidate James Buchanan despite his little political experience because he was against the spread of slavery.
  • I'm not sure what's going on here...
  • James Buchanan - Pennsylvanian senator with a lot of political experience due to serving as President Polk's Secretary of State
  • Buchanan ended up winning the election of 1856
  • Buchanan - 14/15 slave states Frémont - 11/16 free states Fillmore - 1 state
