  • The author Sherman Alexie expresses a theme of friendship when Junior gives Rowdy one of his cartoons when they were angry with each other after Junior left the reservation. Junior expected Rowdy to tear up the cartoon but he didn't. Junior says "But Rowdy still respected my cartoons, And so maybe he still respected me a little bit."
  • Another example of relationships is the moment when Junior and his family attends his grandmother's funeral. As there Indian tradition, they never cry, but instead laugh. Alexie wants us to realize that each funeral is a funeral for everyone. When a loved one passes away, they would want you to be happy with them.
  • Finally, an example of family and friend relationships is when Junior moved schools and was taught how to read by Gordy. Gordy tells him how to read a book and it should be taken seriously. Junior brings up his cartoons, that he takes them seriously too. He uses them to honor his loved ones and to make fun of the world.
  • "I draw cartoons."
