John Napier was born on February 1st 1550. He is from Scotland but he lived in Merchiston Tower. The Merchiston in Edinburghlies to the south west of the Wrychtishousis estate.
John Napier's father, Sir Archibald Napier was a wealthy landowner and his mother, Janet Bothwell was the daughter of the politician and judge Francis Bothwell.
John had a private tutor in his early education. He was sent to St Salvator's College, St. Andrews for his formal education when he was 13. He was interested in theology while he was in college, but then he left college without earning his degree.When he was young John travelled to Main Land Europe for his further education.

After completing his studies he returned to Scotland in 1571 when he was 21. Then he soon engaged himself and got married with Elizabeth Stirling, and began raising a growing family. One daughter named Janet Napier, and Francis Napier.
