The Mayflower landed in Plymouth Plantation in 1620.
Life was difficult for the Pilgrims. More than half died during their first winter.
Squanto, a Native American, taught the Pilgrims to hunt, fish, and grow crops.
Because of Squanto, the Pilgrims were able to grow and store enough food for the next winter. The Pilgrims were thankful!
The Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated with a feast that lasted for 3 days. It was the first Thanksgiving.
President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday. It is now celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November.
