The Wounded Knee Massacre 1890
The after math
The Wounded Knee Massacre occurred on December 29, 1890 near Wounded Knee Creek on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
On the morning of December 29, the troops went into the camp to disarm the Lakota. A deaf tribesman was reluctant to give up his rifle claiming he paid a lot for it. A fight broke out and a shot was fired which resulted in the 7th Calvary opening fire from all sides. A few Lakota got away but the soldiers chased them down and killed them even though they were unarmed!
By the time the battle was over, close to 300 men, women and children of the Lakota tribe were killed. 25 American soldiers died. 20 soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor which were later taken away. In 1990 both houses of the US congress passed a resolution formally expressing "deep regret" for the massacre.
