  • King john was clever greedy and cruel. He angered nobles with oppressive taxes and over abusive powers. Finally, in 1215, Nobles made King John sign the Magna Carta. Which Established, the due process of law, that nobles had certain rights and made clear the monarch must obey the law.
  • Magna Carta
  • The crusades started when Pope Urban II commands Christians to take back the holy land. The main intentions of the pope was to unite Christians in western Europe and eastern Europe, and fight Muslims instead of each other. Christians never achieved their goals. But the crusades did allowed the church to gain more power.
  • In these universities student worked hard. They woke up at 5 am for prayers, they then attended class until 10 am, when they had their first meal, which consisted of beef tip, and some soup mixed with some oatmeal. Afternoon classes continued until 5 pm. Finally, students ate a light dinner and then studied until it was time for bed.
  • In medieval times Nobles and the church had more power and authority than kings. Monarchs then felt like they should have more power. They expanded the royal domain by, establishing a system of royal justice that undermined the church, developed a system of taxes, and strengthened ties with the larger middle class. In 1066 King Edward died without an heir. This then led to William of Norman and Harold battling for power. After William defeated Harold he and his successors increased royal authority by establishing common law, and a jury. King John then took the throne. He was clever greedy and cruel. King John denied an appointment by the pope of a new arch bishop, and then angered nobles with oppressive taxes and over abusive powers. Finally, in 1215, Nobles made King John sign the Magna Carta. Which Established, the due process of law, that nobles had certain rights and made clear the monarch must obey the law. This then sprang England into its next form of government, Parliament.
  • The plague was spread by fleas on rats, that infested small towns, trade routes, and even noble’s land. Effects of the plagues were, huge lumps under your arms, called buboes. Then black spots would appear on your skin. The plague struck quickly and not many were able to prevent it. After you were infected with the plague, you were most likely to die within a few days.

The pope wanted to fix the split between Christians in western Europe and eastern Europe, and fight Muslims instead of each other. All the crusades lasted from 1096 to 1204. The first crusades were the only wars that came close to achieving the Christian objectives. Yet the Muslims were able to keep the holy land, with the help of Salah al-din. Leaving Christians never achieving their goals. But the crusades did increase trade, and allowed the church to gain more power than ever before even more powerful kings took over.
  • The 100 Years War was a war fought between Britain and France. the English king declared himself King of France with the start of the war. France had an advantage with the use of the longbow, which could fire arrows 3 times as fast. The French almost the war lost until Joan of Arc, a 17-year-old peasant women. She claimed that god sent her to save France, and she did well in leading France . Although it did not end well for Joan. With England winning the war they tried Joan for witchcraft and burned her on a stake.
  • As economic and political conditions improved in the high middle ages, the need for education expanded. In 1100s schools started to appear. By getting an education sons of wealthy towns people might hope to get a high quality job. These schools turned into the first universities. Student life offered few comforts. They woke up early, and went to sleep late. They spent most of their time studying, and praying, with little lunch or dinner. Among student’s women were not allowed to attend universities. This limited women’s opportunity to get quality jobs. Students learned about many topics including philosophy, mathematics, science, literature, and art.
  • During the Middle Ages the church was one of the most important aspects of life. The church was the social center of the towns. Churches were built to massive heights with lavish decorations. One of the most beautiful features were the soaring colorful stain glass windows. Churches also held political power. They had their own courts collected their own taxes, and fielded their own armies.

  • 1348, the Bubonic Plague arrived in Italy, transferred by fleas on rats in towns and ships. The “black death” then ravaged through the rest of Europe. The epidemic spread so quickly, because of the trade routes. The routes spread the disease from Asia to England. Effects of the plagues were, huge lumps under people’s arms, and black spots on their skin. The plague caused upheaval from, society and economy, to the church. Feudalism diminished. People turned to magic, amulets and, witchcraft for cures. Trade decrease drastically and there were now fewer workers. As the cost of labor soared, inflation broke out. The church faced problems of heresies and church corruption. The plague caused a huge loss of life killing 1 out of every three people, and was a major setback for Europe.
  • The 100 Years War was a war fought between Britain and France from 1337 to 1453. it was caused by the English king trying to retain control over the land in France. In 1337 the English king declared himself King of France with the start of the war. At first the war was very one-sided as British use their weapon, the longbow to easily defeat French forces. the French nearly lost the war until Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc was a seventeen-year-old peasant woman and she was able to inspire the French forces to fight harder and beginning winning battles French also used the cannon. Joan of Arc then, was tried with witchcraft and was killed by England. some effects of the 100 Years War were the invention of the cannon and the longbow. The war also made the common soldiers more important than the armored Knights.
  • During the Middle Ages the church is most important achievement was to convert people to Christian. The church was the social center of the towns. In 1140 The architecture style known as Gothic begin to emerge. A key feature of this style was the flying buttress or stone supports that's the outside the church he supports allowed Builders to construct High walls and leave space for high stained glass windows these churches soared to incredible Heights. Another architectural feature was staying glass windows they depicted the life of Jesus a Biblical event or other religious themes. Kings also used castles too protect themselves their people their Nobles and their land.
