  • HAMARTIA
  • "I will not be persuaded to let be the chance of finding out the whole thing clearly" (1216- 1215)
  • HUBRIS
  • Don't worry, Creon. I swear to save Thebes and destroy the killer.
  • PERIPETEIA
  • "I say you are the murderer of the king whose murder you seek" (415- 416)
  • Oedipus' flaw is stubborn curiosity. He pushes others to tell him of his past even as they urge him not to.
  • ANAGNORISIS
  • The prophecy... your past... it is all true...
  • Oedipus' excessive pride pushes him to discover his own past, as he wants to be the one to discover Laius' killer and save Thebes.
  • CATASTROPHE
  • "Horror of darkness enfolding, resistless unspeakable visitant sped by an ill wind in haste! Madness and stabbing pain and memory of evil deeds I have done! (1503- 1506)
  • Oedipus is well respected by all, when Tiresias says he is the killer. Then people start to question Oedipus.
  • CATHARSIS
  • The messenger tells Oedipus the story of his birth, and the Herdsman confirms it and the details of Laius' death. Oedipus has realized that he is adopted, killed Laius, and married his mother.
  • Jocasta, Oedipus' wife, kills herself. Oedipus then blinds himself by stabbing his eyes with the pins from her dress. Oedipus then goes to Cithaeron to die.
  • Oedipus puts his daughters in Creon's care so that they might have the chance to get married. He will now banish himself to Cithaeron.
