  • Benjamin Banneker was born in November 9, 1731 and died in October 9, 1806. He died at the age of 74. He only died of age. He was born in Baltimore County, Maryland. In the day of his funeral, there was a fire in his house that destroyed everything in his house so much of his personal life is a mystery.

  • Benjamin was born from an African-American slave named Robert who had bought his freedom and Mary Banneky who was the daughter of an Englishwoman and was also a free slave. He had 3 sisters. Every evening Benjamin read the Bible to his family.
  • What is he Famous For
  • He ended up attending a Quaker country school but taught himself all the subjects there is to learn:Literature, math, history and he loved to spend his time reading. He wanted to learn more so he took an interest in astronomy.
  • Using What They are Famous for Today
  • Benjamin did not marry anyone nor did he have kids. He worked and studied and tried as much as he could to be like Thomas Jefferson. He read a lot of books.
  • Benjamin Banneker has been known famous for being the first African-American that was a mathematician, a surveyor, and an astronomer. He was considered as the first African-American scientist too.
  • Today we celebrate Benjamin Banneker as the firs African-American scientist. He was also the first 1800's mathematician. We also celebrate all the other mathematicians in pi day which is March 14.
