  • Now in the olden days of King Arthur, All this land was wide of faery, the elf-queen danced oftentimes a green mead.
  • It befell this King Arthur had at his court a lusty bachelor, who, one day was riding from river and happened upon a maiden, walking alone through the corn.
  • From this maiden then, he took her maidenhood.
  • Because of this violation, there was such a clamor that this night was condemned to die - except that the Queen prayed for grace so long, that he granted him to the Queen, to save or destroy him.
  • The queen thanked the king, and then spoke to the knight:
  • I will grant you life if you can tell me what thing it is women you most desire. I will give you a year and a day to seek and learn your answer.
  • The knight took his leave and went forth on his way, seeking in every house and every place where he hoped to find favor.
