Now in the olden days of King Arthur, All this land was wide of faery, the elf-queen danced oftentimes a green mead.
It befell this King Arthur had at his court a lusty bachelor, who, one day was riding from river and happened upon a maiden, walking alone through the corn.
From this maiden then, he took her maidenhood.
Because of this violation, there was such a clamor that this night was condemned to die - except that the Queen prayed for grace so long, that he granted him to the Queen, to save or destroy him.
The queen thanked the king, and then spoke to the knight:
I will grant you life if you can tell me what thing it is women you most desire. I will give you a year and a day to seek and learn your answer.
The knight took his leave and went forth on his way, seeking in every house and every place where he hoped to find favor.
