Before World War 1, powerful countries competed in having the strongest empire. Powerful countries raced for Africa to strengthen their economy and military. Colonization of Africa provided cheap labor, raw materials, and a larger empire.

Archduke Ferdinand was the successor to the Austrian Hungary throne. He was assassinated on June 28th 1914. This event sparked World War 1!
War erupted on a global scale. About 100 countries were part of the war. Around 9 million men were killed and 21 million were wounded.
Germany Surrenders on November 11, 1918!
The Treaty of Versailles formally ended the war. Germany would pay reparations, limit the number of men in it's standing army, and lose some land including Alsace Loraine.

Germany was left in such an unstable state after the war. It was easy for Hitler to rise to power during this time. Hitler gave the Germans the hope they needed and longed for.
