  • After Paul’s leave is finished, he returns to the frontlines to be reunited with his comrades, Kat, Kropp, Muller, and Tjaden. The Kaiser visits the men’s regiment and incites several discussions about the war.

  • Quick, up, Albert!
  • During Paul’s duty to inspect the enemy’s strength, a shell firing occurred near him. He takes refuge in a shell hole, where he stabs a French soldier who jumped in the same hiding spot. Through the soldier’s belongings, Paul discovers the man’s name of Gerard Duval, his family, and address; while Paul is disturbed by his actions, he dismisses the emotional distraught after his survival instincts flare.

  • During their station at an abandoned village, Paul and company prepare a decadent meal, comprising of fresh produce and two pigs. After the enemy discovers their location via the fire’s smoke, the group retreats to their dugout and continue the feast. 
  • Chapter 10
  • Several weeks later, the men are ordered to evacuate a village. As they and the villagers are marching away, a bombardment begins and Paul and Kropp are injured by a shell firing.
  • Kropp is injured near the knee, whereas Paul’s leg and arm are wounded. Through bribing a sergeant-major to get to an ambulance wagon, Paul and Kropp ultimately end up being treated in a Catholic hospital.
  • Paul eventually recovers, leaves the hospital, and given time to spend at home. His departure from his family, especially his mother, is more difficult, as his mother looks more frail than before.
