Colonization in Georgia
It is great that we have Georgia as a buffer colony here, we have protection from the Spanish in the south.
Somewhere around the 15th century, Europeans came to the New World. Here they came in contact with Mississippian Native Americans. The Mississippians were a more advanced group of natives. They were large scale farmers and had pottery, jewelry and other things made by skilled craftsman. The Mississippian culture were the first to see the Europeans, and it ultimately brought their civilization to an end. Diseases, better weapons, and the use of fear killed off thousands and thousands of Mississippian Natives.
Hernando de Soto was the first European explorer to discover parts of GA. He came along with his men, mainly in search of gold. De Soto ended up killing almost all the natives. He had better weapons, diseases that the Natives had never had, and the physiological use of fear. The europeans destroyed the natives but were able to write chronicles about what their culture was like and exactly what had happened to them. They brought both a positive and negative impact on the Mississippian Native Americans.
Great Britain began to settle along the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. A colony became successful if it as able to produce valuable goods and could send it back to the mother country. The British were hoping that things like agricultural products that could not be grown in Britain, would grow in Georgia. In other words, Georgia was founded because of mercantilism. Georgia however, was not able to meet the demands of the British people. However, it did serve as a buffer colony, or a protection, from the surrounding countries that also colonized around that area. These were the primary reasons as to why GA was founded.
