  • CONFLICT

  • In Elsinore Castle, the home of Denmark’s royal family, a tragedy has occurred. Old King Hamlet has died. A group of soldiers are sent to tell Hamlet the news as well as the gossip that his ghost has been seen.
  • CLIMAX
  • Hamlet feels he must revenge his father's death. However, he struggles with the credibility of the “ghost”, and is therefore unsettled on how he should proceed.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Hamlet devises a plan to test his uncle. He hires some actors to perform at the castle and perform a scene resembling his father’s death. Hamlet believes that Claudius’ reaction will determine his guilt or innocence.
  • DENOUNMENT
  • During the play, Claudius goes to pray for forgiveness for killing Hamlet’s father. Hamlet follows Claudius with the intent to kill him. Unfortunately, Hamlet thinks if he kills Claudius while he is praying, he will go to heaven. Therefore, Hamlet does not kill Claudius.
  • Polonius’s daughter, Ophelia, who was in love with Hamlet, drowns herself in a river. Laertes, vows to avenge his father’s death, and blames Hamlet for Ophelia’s death as well. Claudius and Laertes make a plan to kill Hamlet during a fencing match.
  • In the match, Hamlet scores the first point. Claudius offers him a drink from a poisoned goblet but Hamlet declines. Instead, his mother takes a drink and it kills her. Hamlet is struck by Laertes with a poisoned sword.
