  • EXPOSITION
  • CONFLICT
  • RISING ACTION
  • Hamlet travels home, to the castle, to see if the rumours of his father’s ghost are true. When he arrives, he comes upon the ghost and it is indeed his father.
  • CLIMAX
  • The King’s Ghost tells his son that he was murdered by Claudius, the King’s brother. As a result of the King’s death, Claudius married Queen Gertrude and inherited the throne of Denmark.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • Since his father’s death, Hamlet has been acting delirious and manic. Claudius hires two of Hamlet’s close friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to spy on him and find out the cause of his strange behaviour. Claudius is nervous that Hamlet knows about how the Old King died.
  • DENOUNMENT
  • Hamlet realises that his friends have been ordered to spy on him. This convinces him that his father’s ghost was telling the truth and that Claudius is indeed guilty of murdering Old King Hamlet. Hamlet confides his theories to Horatio, his closest friend.
  • Hamlet then goes to speak to his mother about Claudius. While speaking, he hears a noise behind the curtain and thinks it's Claudius spying on him. Hamlet stabs through the curtain with his sword. The person behind the curtain was Claudius’s advisor, Polonius.
  • During the fight, the two switch swords, and Laertes is shortly after wounded with the poison blade as well. Before he dies, Laertes tells Hamlet that Claudius poisoned the goblet. Hamlet stabs Claudius, and forces him to drink the rest of the poison from the goblet.
