The eight divisions The way of mental training
This is James and he wants to reach enlightenment. He wants to start by using the way of mental training.
I am going to put these into practice.
The ways of mental training include the right (or perfect) effort, mindfulness and concentration
Right effort- for the first step of the ways of mental training you must make a conscious effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. For example instead of thinking 'Oh no, I've got work to do and I I am not benefiting from it' think with a more positive attitude and say 'work might be boring but at least I am helping my family and the community'. You also need to work hard and put in good effort for this part of the teaching.
Right mindfulness is the moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment. Pay attention to thoughts and feelings without judging whether they are right or wrong. So in the moment, James would see an old lady trying to cross the road and he would help her to do it using his moment-by-moment awareness.
