  • This is Santiago. He is a fisherman but with very bad luck. In fact he hasn't caught a fish in 84 days. They call him salao . The boy is named manolin and has fished with Santiago. His parents do not want him with Santiago the next time he goes and wants him to switch to another boat

  • Santiago feels something on his line. It was pulling it. It started to pull it very hard. It was a Marlin. Santiago pulls the marlin for 2 days and on the night of the 2nd day he kills it with a harpoon

  • A bunch of sharks start coming. Santiago watched as their dorsal fins slice through the ocean. There were too many sharks and Santiago could not fight them all. The sharks ate the fish leaving the fish bones behind

  • Santiago realizes that he fishes because he loves doing it. He wonders if its a bad thing to kill something you love. He did kill the shark but because of self defense. He apologizes to the marlin for its death

  • Santiago returns with a dead fish while people are looking at it. He sees Manolin after he wakes up. Manolin says he wants to work with him regardless of what his parents say
