"I never was hard or self-sufficient enough. When people are soft-soft people have got to shimmer and g1ow, they've got to put on soft colors, the colors of butterfly' wings, and put a-paper lantern over the light."
I know I fib a good deal. After all a woman's charm is fifty percent illusion....
If I didn't know that you was my wife's sister I'd get ideas about youl
This was a major key moment of gender commentary because it contributes to not only the development of the story but to Tennessee Williams's strong statement of gender in our society. Our character Blanche is shown that if she weren't a important an important family member to our other character Stanley he would only use her for certain desirable things. This is proof that back in the day some women were only regarded as uses for pleasure if they weren't important and it shows Tennessee Williams's strong statement of gender in our society
Go away, then. Get out of here quick before I start screaming fire!
You're not clean enough to bring in the house with my mother.
This is a second key moment in the story because it now represents the role that women at a certain age were supposed to have or else they wouldn't be acceptable for society as wives. The character Mitch has had an ideal of our character Blanche and has put her on a very high standard because of her age, her "young" looks, and the way she speaks to people. That ideal then fails and Blanche's true colors are shown and her secrets are no more. This is proof towards Tennessee Williams's strong statement towards gender in our society and it is shown to be that women after the age of 30 are not not seen as the most attractive.
The author, Tennessee Williams, uses the character Blanche to convey how society views women through her actions, descriptions, and words that strongly emphasize what standard we put them on. The novel helps us understand the key moments of gender inequality and to what degree they are pushed to before they can or even possibly be considered as equal. This is life like because today we as society still put women on a average low when it comes to terms of respect, although over the years it has improved greatly and alot of women have gained power and possibly in the future it will become alot easier for women to obtain power without having to work so hard for it and we can become equal.
