The author says, "He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he had reached too far and had lost his balance. The cry was pinched off short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean sea closed over his head"(Connell 63).
Rainsford swims to nearby island, "Gasping, his hands raw, he reached a flat at the top of the mountain. Dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliff," (Connell 63).
Zaroff finds Rainsford and says, "Its a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home," (Connell 64).
Rainsford is being hunted by Zaroff. "Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for 2 hours. I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve, he said, through tight teeth,"(Connell 75).
Rainsford makes a trap that he thinks will kill Zaroff, "But the hope that was in Rainsford's brain when he climbed died, for he saw in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet. But Ivan was not," (Connell 79).
After the hunt is over, Zaroff says, "One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed," (Connell 80).
