EXPOSITION, CONFLICT INTRODUCED (man vs. society): Della wants to buy her husband Jim a Christmas present. She only has $1.87 to spend. She wants to buy "her Jim" something nice to show her affection.
Tomorrow is Christmas Day and I don't have enough money to buy Jim something nice.
EXPOSITION: Della and Jim don't have much. Their most prized possessions are Della's long hair and Jim's golden watch.
RISING ACTION: Della goes to a hair goods store and asks if they will buy her hair. She chops her hair off and sells it for $20.
RISING ACTION: Della excitedly runs to the store and finds a perfect platinum chain for Jim's watch.
CLIMAX: Jim comes home and sees that Della has cut off all of her hair. He has a blank expression on his face. He takes out a set of expensive combs he has bought for Della.
FALLING ACTION AND RESOLUTION: They had both sold their most prized possessions in an attempt to show their affection for each other. They realize that their love is more valuable than anything money can buy.
