We have a feeling of pride in the United States in 1812. This was called Nationalism.
Representative Henery Clay from Kentucky was a strong Nationalist and after the war he worked with President James Madison to strengthen the country.
In 1815 President Madison presented a plan to Congress for making the United States self sufficient. This means the US would be ecumenically independent with help from foreign markets.
Henry Clay brought about the American System and it included three parts. First, we established a protective tariff. This is a tax on all imported goods. That helps protect the American businesses from foreign completion.
The second part of the American System involved Congress established the second Bank of the United States in 1816. This bank promoted a single currency to make trade easier.
The third part of the American System was to improve the country's transportation system. This was important to a strong economy. We needed roads to transport goods.
