Mary Warren is a maid who works for John Proctor. She is one of the three girls caught in the woods dancing and conjuring spirits. She becomes part of the court that is killing witches , which John does not want her to be part of. She also made a rag doll for Elizabeth.
Proctor is a member of the Puritan religion, which is actually a whole community centered around a specific belief system. This is a culture grounded in the values of Christian faith, hard work, self-denial, and simple living. The unassuming Proctor finds his wife and himself at the center of this scandal.
Reverend Hale is the "spiritual doctor" summoned to evaluate Salem. His job is to diagnose witchcraft if it is present, and then provide a necessary cure through conversion or by removing the "infected" inhabitants from Salem.
