Storyboard Text

  • During this time Elie began his journey through religion. By learning from Moishe the Beadle about the kabbalah, Elie thirst for truth and knowledge began. He was finding his faith and learning the core of judaism. In addition, to comprehend if there really is a God?
  • "And Moishe the Beadle, the poorest of the poor of Sighet, spoke to me for hours on end about the Kabbalah's revelations and its mysteries. Thus began my initiation."
  • Francis at this time was in the middle of his journey through his faith. After, seeing all of the death that was inflicted on the jews, from being burned in the crematorium to being shot. The hope in his heart vanished and was replaced with dullness and senseless. Thats when he became independent and believed he is greater than God. That is the period where Elie was in the stage of rejection.
  • "I stood petrified what had happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked"
  • "On the contrary, I felt very strong. I was the accuser, God the accused...I felt myself to be stronger than this Almighty"
  • "We received more blows than food. The work was crushing. And three days after he left, we forgot to say kaddish"
  • This was the final straw. After, all of the pleads and prayers that God didn't answer. Elie has not only stopped worshipping him, he has pushed him away that he has forgot about God. This is seen when Akiba Drummer asked Elie to recite kaddish for him when he died. However, because of the forceful labor and torture he went through. He had already forgot about Kaddish. For Elise this was the end of his journey, there was no time and thought for God anymore.
  • The quote depicts Elie in the beginning as a person who is determined. His father didn't want him to study Kabbalah. However, instead of listening to his father he followed his own path. Leading him to learn Kabbalah from Moshie the Beadle. That shows great determination and perseverance in character.
  • "He wanted to drive the idea of studying Kabbalah from my mind.In vain. I succeeded on my own in finding a master for myself..."
  • His character has tremendously changed since they were taken away. This is because when Elise was free he was filled with determination to get what he wanted. However, due to the circumstances he his determination, hope, and perseverance has left him to a hollow cocoon. For that reason, he felt empty when he was beat cause he was helpless. There was nothing in his mind an body to drive himself to avenge his father.
  • There was a time where Elie was determined not to leave his family and thats why he stayed instead of leaving. It showed his love for his family and his courage to stay and that takes a lot of perseverance. Due to the concentration camps, Elie has been destroyed so much that his character has been changed to a depressed, selfish, and greedy state. All that he strives for now is not his family, but for food to survive. He rather think about food rather than his family. This shows how Elie character went from a positive to negative way.
  • "I spent my days in total idleness. With only one desire : to eat. I no longer thought of my father, or my mother."
