Billy Coleman was a boy who lived on a farm with his family. He had always wanted a pair of coon dogs (hunting dogs), but his family didn´t have the money to buy them. So young Billy saved up 50 dollars for the dogs. Once Billy got the dogs he started training them to hunt racoons.
The first day of hunting season had been very important to Billy. Tonight would be his first hunt. That night Billy´s dogs got a racoon up in a tree (treed a coon). The tree was the biggest in the entire forest, so there was no way for Billy to climb it. So Billy spent two days swinging his axe, trying to get that tree with the coon down. When the tree finally fell, the racoon jumped out of the tree, and the dogs pounced on it. This was Billys first coon.
After Billy won the championship, he continued to hunt. One night, his dogs accidentally treed a mountain lion. His dogs ended up fighting the mountain lion, and eventually won. Billy checked his dogs for serious injury, he saw none of the kind. But, one the way back, one of his dogs got his entrails (organs) tangled in a bush. During the fight his dog got his stomach ripped open. His dog passed away the next day. Billy was devastated. He dug his dogs grave and buried his dog that day. His other was refusing to eat or drink and the day, Billy found his dog laying on top of his other dogs grave. The next spring, Billy went to check on his dogs graves. What he saw there amazed him: a red fern had grown between his two dogs graves. The indian legends says that only an angle can plant the seeds of a red fern.
One cold, winter night Billy was hunting with his dogs near the river. His dogs followed the scent of a coon across the frozen river. One of his through the ice dogs made it across, but the other fell through the ice into the icy water. Billy hopped into the cold water, then used the wire handle of the his lantern to hook his dogs collar and pull her out.
One day Billy was challenged by the Pritchard boys. They bet that Billy's dogs couldn't catch the "Ghost Coon". The ghost coon was an old coon that no one had ever been able to tree, much less catch. So that night Billy went out hunting with the Pritchard boys. Billy's dogs treed the ghost coon, an incredible feet. The coon pulled many tricks, including hiding in the hollow trunk of a tree. However, Billy refused to kill the old coon because "it had survived survived so long, why kill it now".
Every year there's a championship coon hunt. This year Billy was competing in it. He went to the camp with his grandfather. Billy and his dos did amazing in the first round, they were in first place going to the championship hunt. The championship hunt was the last hunt, whoever got the most coons tonight wins. The night of the hunt it was cold and rainy. Halfway through the hunt it started sleeting and Billy coudn´t see his dogs. Billy thought he had lost his dogs, but eventually he found them at the base of a tree. In the sleet, Billy's dogs had treed a coon! Billy went on to win the championship hunt, and lots of money.
