  • A 14-year-old freshman named Terry was caught smoking in the bathroom of Piscataway High School NJ by a teacher.
  • The principal asked to see her purse and found a pack of cigarettes, rolling papers, and a small amount of marijuana. The police were called and her case went to trial.

  • Later on, she was found guilty of possession of marijuana and was placed on probation. Terry appealed her conviction by claiming that searching her purse violated her Fourth Amendment protection.
