Storyboard of the effect of the war on African Americans.
During the American Civil War, African Americans were treated as slaves, as property. Their owners would do everything they wanted with them. The North was against slavery, while the South wanted Slavery.
With the help of the African Americans, we will win the war and The United States of America will be united again.
I, Abraham Lincoln promise to free all African Americans in the South by passing the Emancipation Proclamation!
Black leaders and abolitionists favored the idea of African Americans recruitment, but Lincoln was not sure because of the opinion of the border states.
Should I recruit black people or not? What would the border states think?
54th Massachusets Regiment!!! Open fire!!
The public opinion changed . Congress authorized African recruitment in 1862. 54th Massachusetts won acceptance for black during the war.
Despite their contribution to the war effort, African Americans faced racism and hostility. In 1863, a company of black men stocked their weapons and refused to pick them up until they received equal treatment.
WE WANT EQUAL TREATMENT. YOU PROMISED IT.
1864, the Congress equalized pay for white and black soldiers, including back pay.
