Noncognitive factors: Fear of Failure. "Even students who are determined to succeed are sometimes afraid of failing that their strong achievement motivation is undermined" (323). It is quite common for students to feel overwhelmed with the multitude of classes they are taking, living up to parents expectations, and their social life.
Noncognitive factor: Self-handicapping. Distinguishing between students whose underachievement is due mainly to anxiety and those who underperform for other reasons is an important issue" (324). Anxiety and stress can be caused by feelings of insurmountable problems that are going on in your life. This can lead to poor performance in school, even though the student is very capable.
"When people succeed and attribute their success to internal causes, such as their ability or effort, they are more likely to approach future tasks confidently and with self assurance" (327).
